Outdoor Education

What is Outdoor Education?

Outdoor Education is an approach to learning rather than a subject. It gives depth to the curriculum and makes an important contribution to children’s physical, personal and social education. Read on to find out what the children think!

At Sunninghill the programme provides a progressive experience in range of outdoor activities with opportunities to develop a sense of stewardship & personal responsibility for the environment. A key aim is the safe use of the outdoors and learning about Risk.

Personal Development is a key feature of Outdoor Education and each pupil learns about the importance of leadership and teamwork, with opportunities to take on responsibility and to put skills learnt into practice. In Year 4 children take part in a 3 day residential trip and an overnight camp while in Years 5-8 they go on a 5 day expedition. Each year group visits a different area and locations travelled to in recent years include the Wye valley, Peak District, Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and the West Coast of Scotland.

This year we aim to travel overseas for the first time on expedition.
